Matthew Douglas Johnston is currently a Van Vleck Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He researches several topics within the scope of chemical reaction network theory, including the equivalence of mass-action systems and the Global Attractor Conjecture.

He received his M.Sc. from the University of Guelph (Guelph, Ontario, Canada) in 2006 and his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) in 2011.
