Portsmouth is a city of approximately 200,000 people on the South coast of England, close to Southampton and the Isle of Wight. The University of Portsmouth is located in the Western part of the city, close to the docks.

Travel information can be found on the University of Portsmouth website. The workshop will be held in room 2.04a of the Lion Gate building.

Travel

The closest airports are Southampton and Gatwick. The train stations closest to the University are Portsmouth & Southsea, and Portsmouth Harbour. There are direct train connections to London, Brighton, and Cardiff (via Bristol, Bath and Southampton). Both National Express and Megabus provide coach services to Portsmouth. The M275 motorway goes directly into the heart of Portsmouth. Portsmouth also has ferry connections to the Isle of Wight, France (Caen, Le Havre, Cherbourg, St Malo) and Spain (Bilbao, Santander).

Accommodation

There are numerous bed & breakfasts and hotels in Southsea, the Southernmost area of Portsmouth, 20–30 minutes’ walk from the University. There are also several hotels closer to the workshop venue.

Food and Drink

The University is 10 minutes’ walk from Gunwharf Quays, a modern shopping centre with many chain restaurants and several bars and nightclubs. 15–20 minutes’ walk away are Osborne Road and Palmerston Road, with more restaurants and bars, including several independent establishments. 25–30 minutes’ walk takes you to Albert Road, where there are plenty of takeaways, restaurants and pubs.

Entertainment

Gunwharf Quays houses a cinema and bowling alley. Portsmouth has three theatres: the New Theatre Royal in Guildhall Walk, the Kings Theatre on Albert Road, and the Groundlings Theatre in Portsea. Live music can be found at the the Guildhall on Guildhall Walk, at the Pyramid Centre on the seafront, and at the Wedgewood Rooms on Albert Road.
